While we were in Arizona welcoming Aly home from her mission, I kept pondering on what all we - Robert and I - had accomplished in the 18 months she was gone. Unfortunately, I was getting pretty bummed about it because the short answer was "NOT MUCH." Robert is still in the same step of his education. I'm still in the trenches as a stay-at-home mom with a church calling as Primary chorister. We added James to the family, but that hasn't really changed our life routine a whole lot other than there is one more kid to team up against me getting any of my to-do list done, so when all was said and done I kept coming back to the thought that on paper we had no significant accomplishments or progressions.
I think most people probably go through phases when they have these same thoughts or feelings of being in a rut. After thinking about this for a while, I recalled an article that I read a couple years ago written by Robert's cousin's wife, Kendra, called
"Invisible Growth". (Sidenote - Kendra, Jeremy, and their little crew have a daily family vlog that everyone should check out:
J House Vlogs) She talks about having some of these same feelings, but she realized she WAS growing and progressing. It was just "invisible."
"For instance, I used to struggle to go grocery shopping with one child. Now I struggle to go grocery shopping with three children. BAM! Invisible growth."
This article touched me when I first read it 2 years ago, but it completely resonates with me now. I started to think about ways I've grown that no one sees. Things I'm doing better physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I've grown in immense ways! Someday, maybe I will get a chance to progress in more tangible ways - finish my undergrad and grad degrees, resume some hobbies I've had to put aside for now, serve missions for my church with Robert. But for now, I'm growing from the inside, and that's okay. In fact, I think some of the most important growth we can have in this life is invisible. Ponder on that one for a minute ;)
A few ways I'm growing then (18 months ago) vs. now...
- THEN: Family scripture time happened maybe twice a week. Personal scripture study was a thing of the past. NOW: Family and personal scripture study happen at a regular time almost every day.
- THEN: Parented a strong willed, active 3-year-old and sweet yet stubborn 1.5-year-old. Spanked at least one of them at least once a day. NOW: Parent a strong willed, active 4.5-year-old, sweet yet stubborn 2-year-old, and an increasingly mischievous 1-year-old and all the new challenges those ages entail. Resort to spanking maybe just once a week.
- THEN: Had Robert home helping out the majority of the time. NOW: Robert works at the school as much as I can force him to and I am more productive with my days than I was when he was home.
- THEN: I was doing my best to be the person Heavenly Father wants me to be. NOW: I'm 18 months of trials, triumphs, learning, and growing closer to becoming that person.
